Bonacina Potable Gold
Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks No 37
This rather obscure early 17th-century work exists as both a printed book and several manuscripts, featuring a wonderful series of coloured illustrations. During his research for the translation, Paul Ferguson uncovered some new manuscripts and, it appears, the only surviving exemplar of a printed edition. The illustrations for this present edition are facsimile paintings made by Adam McLean, based on the images in the most beautifully painted manuscript.
Although of Italian origin, Bonacina seems to have based himself in South Moravia during the early decades of the 17th century and wrote this work around 1616. He focusses on potable or drinkable gold, an alchemical medical preparation or panacea that was highly sought after at the time.
