Nazari - Three Dreams
Magmum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks No 27: Three Dreams on the Transmutation of Metals
This remarkable book, written in the latter half of the 16th century, is an elaborate allegory presented through three dreams. In these dreams, the author embarks on strange journeys, encountering various symbolic figures who guide him to realise the errors, deceptions, and falsehoods of alchemy. He is led by Bernard of Treviso towards an understanding of the true nature of alchemy.
This work is one of the key allegories of alchemy and appeared very early in alchemical publishing. Although written in Italian and never translated into Latin, it likely influenced the explosion of allegorical alchemy in the early 17th century. The book draws upon the Hypnerotomachia (Dream of Poliphilus), printed in 1499, with Nazari sharing a similar fascination for elaborate descriptive details of architecture and landscape.
This is the first-ever translation of this previously obscure work. Few may have heard of it before, but it is truly one of the hidden gems of alchemical allegory. The book features several woodcut illustrations that have recently gained recognition.
