The Hermetic Garden of Daniel Stolcius
Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks No. 5 The Hermetic Garden of Daniel Stolcius
During the early 17th century, Daniel Stolcius was a prominent popularizer of the symbolic tradition of alchemy. His work, Viridarium Chymicum, published in 1624, has been described as "a pictorial encyclopedia of 17th-century alchemy" and is now well-known and respected, having been republished in its entirety in recent years. However, his other major work, Hortulus Hermeticus, remains relatively obscure due to the extreme rarity of its copies. This work consists of 160 emblematic plates, each accompanied by a short verse. These images and corresponding poems are likely intended as meditative alchemical exercises, providing an in-depth experience of the symbolic material of the alchemical tradition.
